ICM Workshop with Shona Perkins & Photo Tour with Foto Magica in Northumberland

August 19–22, 2026

Physical demands: Low

Northumberland – A Dream Destination for Landscape Photographers

England’s northernmost county needs no introduction to landscape photographers. With mile after mile of rolling sand dunes, pristine white beaches, and more castles than any other county in the country, it’s hardly surprising that the coastline—from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north to the mouth of the River Coquet in the south—has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here, dramatic nature and historical richness converge in one of Britain’s most photogenic landscapes.

Together with us, you’ll get to experience the following places, among others

Shona Perkins

  • Coldingham Bay

  • Spittal Beach, Berwick-upon-Tweed

  • Berwick Pier and Lighthouse

  • Goswick and Cheswick Sands

  • Holy Island

  • Bamburgh Beach and Castle

  • Beadnell Bay

  • Dunstanburgh Castle

The adventure is divided into two parts. We’ll start with a workshop focused on ICM led by the incredibly delightful and inspiring photographer Shona Perkins, followed by a photo tour of Northumberland and carefully selected locations with Foto Magica.

Program

We’ll meet at the Edinburgh airport for a shared ride directly to our hotel—the charming and beautifully situated Tankerville Arms Hotel, just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed. Here, each participant will have a spacious double room at their disposal.

In the afternoon, Shona will arrive for an introduction and overview of the coming days. She will also share her insights and thought process. Before dinner, we’ll take a short walk in the surrounding area to get to know the surroundings. After dinner, and until sunset, we’ll go for an ICM session along the beaches of Northumberland.

Day 2 – Morning Light and Photo Development

We’ll start early, about an hour before sunrise, to continue working with ICM in the first light of day. After breakfast, the day continues with a class on photo processing, where Shona will demonstrate her workflow and walk us through how she edits her ICM images. Feel free to bring your own computer so you can follow along hands-on.
During the afternoon and evening until nightfall, we’ll run a final ICM session together with Shona—in a workshop format and in the field.

Day 3 – Northumberland

The morning begins just like the day before with an ICM session on the beach. Now it’s time to put into practice the skills we’ve developed during the workshop with Shona. This is followed by a group breakfast at the hotel and a full day exploring Northumberland’s beautiful coastal landscape and historic sites. In the afternoon and evening, we’ll focus specifically on the unique sandstone formations at Spittal Beach.

Day 4 – Internship at the beach

We’ll also start this morning with a photo shoot at one of the nearby beaches—both within the ICM framework and with an eye for the small, intimate landscapes. After breakfast, we’ll continue taking photos. We’ll head back to the airport around 2:00 p.m.

Shona Perkins

Shona is an abstract photographer who specializes in seascape photography and ICM photography. Strongly influenced by contemporary art and abstract minimalism, Shona has, in recent years, developed a passion for intentional camera movement (ICM photography).

Technique is incredibly important to Shona, and while ICM photography allows for a certain degree of creative freedom and experimentation, Shona applies a thoughtful, focused, and disciplined approach to her work that ensures the best results are achieved in-camera.

Shona is often described as creating a sense of calm through her images, and she succeeds in capturing emotional depth, solitude, stillness, and poignant beauty in her work, while maintaining her distinctive painterly style.
